Frequently Asked Questions
What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is an international organization leader in communication and leadership development, since 1924. Through its global network of 16,400 clubs in 142 countries, the program helped more than 352,000 members improve their speaking and management skills.
What is the atmosphere of the meetings?
Our club’s environment is fun, inspiring and supportive. We have fun and laugh at every meeting; we are always inspired by the speeches and the personal experience shared; and we all provide support, respect and motivation to each other.
Can I attend as a guest?
Yes, everyone is welcome to attend as a guest and learn more about the Toastmaster experience. Feel free to contact us before coming so we know to expect you. You are also encouraged to attend multiple clubs to find the one that best fits your needs. There are no fees to attend as a guest.
As a guest what am I required to do?
At the beginning of the meeting, the Toastmaster will ask the guests to briefly introduce themselves and comment on their interest in the program. In the end, guests will be asked to share their thoughts on the meeting. Guests are also welcome to join in the Table Topics ‘impromptu speaking’ session if they like.
When does the club meet?
The club meets every Tuesday, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
Can anyone become a member?
Langara Toastmasters Club welcomes everyone – students, alumni, faculty, staff, retirees and the general community. Members must be at least 18 years of age.
How often will I be able to speak?
You can speak as often as you want, simply sign up for roles and schedule prepared speeches. In each of the roles, you’ll practice different skills such as time management, listening, and giving constructive feedback. You can also volunteer to speak during the Table Topics session where you can practice impromptu speaking.
How do I join Toastmasters?
First, come as a guest to check our club and the atmosphere. Second, when you decide to join, fill out the membership form, pay your dues, and you’ll become an official member of our club. The more you attend and participate, the more improvements you will experience.
Are most club speakers beginners or experienced?
As we are a new club, the majority of speakers are beginners, learning and improving together. We also have a few experienced speakers as well as two mentors to guide us through the program.
How much does it cost to be a member of Langara Toastmasters Club?
Membership dues are $60 paid every six months (equivalent to $10 per month, in April and October), in addition to a one-time entrance fee of $25 for new Toastmasters members. If you are a member of another club and wish to transfer, there is no entrance fee.
To ensure that cost is not a barrier, Alumni and Community Engagement, Co-operative Education, People Services, International Education, and Student Engagement departments have come together to sponsor the Langara Toastmasters Club. This sponsorship provides significant subsidies
for students, employees, and alumni.
Can I ask an experienced member to be my mentor?
Definitely, you are welcome and encouraged to ask one of the members to be your mentor. You can also ask the Vice President of Education to help you choose one. Your mentor will provide support, encouragement, and feedback as you develop your speaking skills and deliver the speeches.
Do all meetings follow a standard agenda?
Yes, all Toastmasters meetings follow a structured agenda. We begin by introducing the supporting roles, then move to Table Topics where members can practice impromptu speaking and receive feedback. After we have two prepared speeches, followed by evaluations. We end with members providing reports about the meeting (time, grammar, evaluation).
